“The day of my birthday I received the best present of my life when I got the letter from Bloomberg Nursing saying I was an award recipient,” said Clara Juandó-Prats, international PhD student. “Without that financial assistance, I wouldn’t have been able to move from Spain and pursue my dreams of continuing my work at this highly-respected research Faculty.”
The acceptance letter into Bloomberg Nursing was only the first step for Clara, who researches women from minority groups and their access to the health care system, and for many international students who apply to the program. Before receiving the news that she would get financial assistance through student awards, she faced the real possibility that she might have to turn down the program because of the costs involved. Through student awards, Bloomberg Nursing was able to help Clara continue her education and in August 2012, before the start of the school year, Clara and her family moved from Spain and settled into Toronto.
In recognition of talented international students like Clara, who are shaping health care at a local and global level, the Faculty has created the Dean’s Scholarship. Beginning fall 2013, three new incoming international students, one BScN, one MN and one PhD, will receive this prestigious award. Based on academic merit, this scholarship will provides $10,000 of financial assistance per recipient. This new scholarship provides another opportunity for international students to make their dreams of a nursing education a reality.
