Laura Fairley is a registered nurse with a clinical background in street outreach nursing and residential hospice and palliative care. Her practice has focused on caring for marginalized and underserved populations, particularly people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity and people who use drugs.
Fairley’s clinical expertise includes harm reduction, community outreach, psychosocial rehabilitation, end-of-life care, bereavement support, trauma-informed care, and inclusive care for 2SLGBTQI+ and gender-diverse populations. Her interests in trans health include improving access to respectful, affirming, and culturally responsive care and addressing systemic barriers to health care.
As an educator, Fairley teaches anti-oppressive and relational approaches to care, with a focus on addressing health-care stigma and discrimination. She supports learners to develop the humility, critical reflexivity, knowledge, and skills needed to provide competent, compassionate care grounded in dignity, respect, and equity. She incorporates simulation-based education to support learning through exploration of complex clinical and relational situations.
Her research and community advocacy focus on improving equitable access to health and palliative care for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity, including people who live outdoors and people who use drugs. Her work also seeks to advance harm reduction and inclusive, affirming care for trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse communities.
I think there were pictures taken to update my profile a few years ago but I don’t know what happened to them… do you have a file of the options somewhere that I could select from? I agree that this one is quite old! I think I was pregnant with my first child when that current photo was taken and she’s about to turn 17!!!
