Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners

The Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners will equip Nurse Practitioners with the knowledge and tools to confidently assess and develop a treatment plan for the acutely ill adult patient.


Role of the Nurse Practitioner and Care of the Hospitalized Adult 1

January 13 – March 9, 2020

Delivery Format: Online

This 8-week online course consists of 7 modules and one week for final evaluation. Participants will focus on the role of the nurse practitioner in acute care hospital settings and as most-responsible provider (MRP); essentials of diagnostic reasoning including 12-lead ECG and chest X-ray interpretation; antibiotic use and drug resistance: pain management; and cardiology. This is the first course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Care of the Hospitalized Adult 2

Delivery Format: Online

This 8-week course will focus on respirology, neurology, rheumatology, musculoskeletal, peripheral artery disease, and mental health and addictions. This is the second course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Care of the Hospitalized Adult 3

This 8-week course will focus on neurology, dermatology, wound care, care of complex and frail older adult, end of life care and MAID. This is the third course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Care of the Hospitalized Adult 4

This 6-week course will focus on gastroenterology, nutrition, mobility, hematology, sepsis and shock. This is the fourth course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Certificate in Nursing Education for the Practice Setting

Delivery Format: Online

This certificate program has been developed to provide aspiring &/or practicing nursing educators & practice leaders with advanced level education, tools, and skills, to enhance their knowledge and expertise in the provision of clinical education that supports excellence in professional practice. The “Certificate in Nursing Education for the Practice Setting” (Not-for-credit) is comprised of three 10-week on-line courses to be successfully completed over a two-year period. Courses may also be taken as “stand alone” courses.


Nursing Education for the Practice Setting: Theoretical Perspectives and Context (Course 1)

This 10-week on-line course focuses on development of a foundational knowledge base in education theory and pedagogical issues relevant to nursing education in the practice setting. Participants will explore the challenges and opportunities for teaching and learning, and educational leadership within the unique context of practice settings.


Nursing Education for the Practice Setting: Design, Delivery and Facilitation (Course 2)

This 10-week on-line course focuses on the practical application of theory and evidence on design, delivery and facilitation of nursing education in the practice setting. The course will include: development of learning needs assessments for individuals and groups; creation of learner centred goals and objectives; incorporation of diverse approaches and techniques for educational program design and delivery; and consideration of practical and operational needs for delivery of educational programs.


Nursing Education for the Practice Setting: Assessment and Evaluation (Course 3)

April 8-June 16, 2020

This 10-week on-line course focuses on development of a foundational knowledge base in education assessment and evaluation relevant to nursing education in the practice setting. Participants will: explore current and evidence-based approaches to program evaluation; appreciate the value of integrating assessment and evaluation methods throughout and education plan; examine a variety of assessment and evaluation tools; and develop a systematic approach to evaluation practices.

Wound Management for Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses: A Best Practice Boot Camp on Lower Extremity Ulcers

February 22-23, 2020

This interactive two day course will provide Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses with up-to-date practices in wound management, focusing on the management of lower extremity ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. The course will equip NPs and APNs with the knowledge and skill to effectively assess, diagnose and manage lower extremity wounds. Interactive simulation lab sessions will focus on physical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, selection and use of wound treatments; and advanced wound management techniques.

PeriAnaesthesia Review Course

This one day course will cover essential competencies in the care of the perianesthesia patient. The Canadian Nurses Association’s (CNA) Blueprint for Perianesthesia Nursing Practice is the framework used for the content review. The course will include best practices and current evidence related to assessment, care planning and management across all phases of the perianesthesia experience (pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative).


Review of Health Assessment Across the Lifespan

This one-day course will review health assessment using a systems approach and will include how to do a head to toe assessment. Participants will practice focused health assessments in a simulation laboratory. This course will provide a refresher on health assessment for practicing registered nurses or nurse practitioner students or nurse practitioners who wish to review and build upon their health assessment skills.

The Foundations and Scholarship of Clinical Teaching

Pressure Injuries and Complex Surgical Wounds: An Advanced Practice Course

Based on the latest standards of care, this course will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of pressure injuries and surgical wounds. Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Nurses, and Registered Nurses working with clients at risk or who have pressure injuries will learn advanced technical skills in wound management as well as gain an understanding of the latest technologies in wound healing.


NP-Primary Health Care: Nurse Practitioner Exam Prep Course
