OSCE Simulations for Nurse Practitioners – A Preparatory Course

This course will assist Nurse Practitioners to prepare and build confidence for participation in an OSCE (Objective Standardized Comprehensive Evaluation). Participants will learn how to effectively demonstrate and communicate their ability to conduct a focused history and physical examination, make a diagnosis, and communicate a therapeutic plan of care.


Advanced Ostomy Care and Management

This is a 10 week self-directed online course for healthcare professionals interested in enhancing their knowledge and skill in the application of best practices for ostomy and peristomal skin care. It is applicable to individuals working in acute, long-term care & community settings. This comprehensive course will assist you to critically analyze complex ostomy care problems and apply unique management techniques required to provide quality care and support to people and families who are living with ostomies.


A Palliative Approach to Care for Clients with Progressive and Life-Limiting Illnesses

Through the development of advanced communication, assessment and complex symptom management skills, explored in this course, health care practitioners may effectively and confidently apply a general palliative care approach to care for adult clients and their families with deteriorating health statuses across all health care settings. This 6-week online course has been designed to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based education experience for Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals for whom palliative care is not the main focus of their clinical practice.


Certificate in Nursing Education for the Practice Setting

Delivery Format: Online

This certificate program has been developed to provide aspiring &/or practicing nursing educators & practice leaders with advanced level education, tools, and skills, to enhance their knowledge and expertise in the provision of clinical education that supports excellence in professional practice. The “Certificate in Nursing Education for the Practice Setting” (Not-for-credit) is comprised of three 10-week on-line courses to be successfully completed over a two-year period. Courses may also be taken as “stand alone” courses.


Nursing Education for the Practice Setting: Theoretical Perspectives and Context (Course 1)

September 25 – December 3, 2019

This 10-week on-line course focuses on development of a foundational knowledge base in education theory and pedagogical issues relevant to nursing education in the practice setting. Participants will explore the challenges and opportunities for teaching and learning, and educational leadership within the unique context of practice settings.


Nursing Education for the Practice Setting: Design, Delivery and Facilitation (Course 2)

January 15 – March 24, 2020

Delivery Format: Online

This 10-week on-line course focuses on the practical application of theory and evidence on design, delivery and facilitation of nursing education in the practice setting. The course will include: development of learning needs assessments for individuals and groups; creation of learner centred goals and objectives; incorporation of diverse approaches and techniques for educational program design and delivery; and consideration of practical and operational needs for delivery of educational programs.


Nursing Education for the Practice Setting: Assessment and Evaluation (Course 3)

September 25 – December 3, 2019

Delivery Format: Online

This 10-week on-line course focuses on development of a foundational knowledge base in education assessment and evaluation relevant to nursing education in the practice setting. Participants will: explore current and evidence-based approaches to program evaluation; appreciate the value of integrating assessment and evaluation methods throughout and education plan; examine a variety of assessment and evaluation tools; and develop a systematic approach to evaluation practices.


Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners

Delivery Format: Online

The Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners will equip Nurse Practitioners with the knowledge and tools to confidently assess and develop a treatment plan for the acutely ill adult patient.


Role of the Nurse Practitioner and Care of the Hospitalized Adult 1

Winter 2020
8 week online course
Delivery Format: Online

This 8-week online course consists of 7 modules and one week for final evaluation. Participants will focus on the role of the nurse practitioner in acute care hospital settings and as most-responsible provider (MRP); essentials of diagnostic reasoning including 12-lead ECG and chest X-ray interpretation; antibiotic use and drug resistance: pain management; and cardiology. This is the first course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Care of the Hospitalized Adult 2

September 30 – November 24, 2019
8 week online course
Delivery Format: Online

This 8-week course will focus on respirology, neurology, rheumatology, musculoskeletal, peripheral artery disease, and mental health and addictions. This is the second course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Care of the Hospitalized Adult 3

7 week online course
Delivery Format: Online

This 7-week course will focus on renal, genitourinary, endocrine, end of life care, care of the complex and frail older adult, dermatology and wound management. This is the third course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Care of the Hospitalized Adult 4

6 week online course
Delivery Format: Online

This 6-week course will focus on gastroenterology, nutrition, mobility, hematology, sepsis and shock. This is the fourth course in a 4-course not-for-credit Certificate in Hospital & Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners.


Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Reasoning in Primary Health Care: A Review for Nurse Practitioners

This online course for Nurse Practitioners and/or nurse practitioner students is a review of advanced health assessment in primary health care. This one-day course will review health assessment using a systems approach and will include how to do a head to toe assessment. Participants will practice focused health assessments in a simulation laboratory. Wound Management for Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses: A Best Practice Boot Camp on Lower Extremity Ulcers

November 30-December 1, 2019

This interactive two day course will provide Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses with up-to-date practices in wound management, focusing on the management of lower extremity ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. The course will equip NPs and APNs with the knowledge and skill to effectively assess, diagnose and manage lower extremity wounds. Interactive simulation lab sessions will focus on physical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, selection and use of wound treatments; and advanced wound management techniques.

This workshop will focus on developing advanced skills for facilitating conversations associated with progressive and advanced disease transitions. Emphasis will be placed on principles of effective communication and shared decision making, mitigating conflict and managing high emotional states, and strategies for sharing bad news and conducting serious illness conversations. The workshop will address both the perspective of the client and family, and the health care professional.

The Canadian Nurses Association’s (CNA) Blueprint for Perianesthesia Nursing Practice is the framework used for the content review. Based on the latest standards of care, this course will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of pressure injuries and surgical wounds.
