Leadership & Management 3 Managing Business

This 6-week on-line course focuses on the practical application of theory and evidence for leading/managing effective and efficient clinical teams.  Content will specifically address fiscal and operational needs of high functioning clinical teams.  It is designed to meet the needs of those starting careers in or aspiring towards leadership positions in healthcare. The context within which the leader/manager functions, may include acute care, community, primary health care, and/or long-term care; and the leader/manager’s clients may include frontline health care professionals, unregulated professionals and support staff, and patients and their families. Participants will explore a wide variety of situations, and common issues encountered in these roles.

The course includes:

  • exploration and application of financial management skills and abilities
  • application of strategies to develop, manage & evaluate clinical team staffing and scheduling needs
  • effectively leading & managing routine clinical operational needs (e.g. patient flow, resources, information systems & equipment, delegation & collaboration etc.)
  • examining situational crisis management practices

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Apply basic budgeting concepts and processes for the development and management of an operational budget.
  • Describe the manager/leader’s role in addressing resource and supply needs.
  • Articulate the manager/leader’s role in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations & requirements.
  • Apply an evidence-based approach to determining staffing & scheduling needs.
  • Articulate day to day operational management strategies for team effectiveness.
  • Describe the manager/leader role in internal &/or external disaster/emergency planning.

On a weekly basis, participants are expected to:

  • View an e-learning module
  • Read required readings
  • Actively engage with the course material by participating in learning activities.

For this course, the learning activities / assignments are:

  • Four on-line discussion board activities
  • Tow short learning activity/quizzes
  • One short written paper
  • Three Optional LIVE Tutorial (via Zoom) sessions will take place for those wishing to connect with faculty/peers in advance of Quiz/Assignment due dates

  • Refund Policy – To withdraw from the course and receive a refund, your written request must be emailed to pd.nursing@utoronto.ca by February 16, 2024. No refunds will be given after this date. All refunds are subject to an administration fee of $100 + tax. As an alternative, a colleague may attend in your place. Please send your substitution request at least 7 days before the course.

OSAP Funding

The Ontario Student Assistance Program now offers funding for micro-credentials (short training programs offered by post-secondary institutions), including a number of courses offered by the Centre for Professional Development. This funding initiative is part of Ontario’s micro-credentials strategy, helping learners access more opportunities to train or upskill for in-demand jobs through loans and grants.

How to Apply for OSAP Funding

This course is OSAP approved (more approved courses are listed below, and you can also verify on the Micro-credentials Portal). To apply for financial assistance through OSAP you will need to establish an OSAP account. You must apply before the course completion date. Visit Ontario.ca/OSAP.

Once you have registered for an eligible OSAP Micro-credential program, the University Registrar’s Office requires a Micro-Credential Program information form to be completed to process your OSAP application. Please fill out the top section of the form and send it to pd.nursing@utoronto.ca to get assistance in completing the form.
