To increase health human resource capacity in hospitals, the Ministry of Health has expanded the Extern Program. Under this Enhanced Extern program, participating hospitals will receive funding to employ eligible medical, nursing, respiratory therapy, paramedic students, physiotherapy students, and occupational therapy students as Externs on paid assignments. Externships are currently available throughout Ontario.
Externs work as unregulated health care providers under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered health professional in the care environment, as deemed appropriate by the hospital. Externships provide opportunities for students to develop clinical competency, understanding of nursing and team roles, and increased confidence and readiness for practice.
Student Eligibility:
- Nursing students in any year of study in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program and Practical Nursing (PN) program are eligible to apply to extern positions.
In addition to applying to advertised positions directly, interested students are invited to complete this survey to help connect them to participating hospital(s): Enhanced Extern Program – Student Interest Survey
