The Betty Burcher Mentoring Award recognizes faculty who, over an academic year, exemplified the spirit and legacy of Betty Burcher in enhancing student or faculty development in teaching and learning beyond usual activities through mentoring.

Betty spent most of her nursing career at Toronto Public Health, working to protect, promote and preserve the health of vulnerable populations, before she came to the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing as an educator. Betty had a strong commitment to social justice and equity, and these principles informed the ways she felt, thought, and acted in both her professional and personal life. She was an incredibly intelligent, caring, passionate and generous teacher and colleague. She always promoted and modelled a climate of care, respect, inclusion and collegiality. Nothing brought her more joy than to help students and colleagues reach their full potential and she did so by providing opportunities for scholarly and clinical collaboration as well as professional networking. She invited people “in” and brought individuals together in community to learn from one another and work towards a common goal. Betty mentored people in her life to be courageous, to think critically and creatively, to lead with compassion and optimism, to have humility, and to do the work with a healthy sense of humour, never forgetting to laugh with one another.
