Bloomberg Nursing Announces Faculty Promotions

The faculty is delighted to announce that Assistant Professor Robyn Stremler and Assistant Professor Louise Rose have both received notice that they are to be promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, effective July 1. Dr. Rose’s research focuses on the care and management of patients requiring mechanical ventilation through all aspects of care, while Dr. Stremler’s work has aided sleep-deprived families, from pregnancy to the teenage years, to improve health outcomes. This wonderful milestone in their careers comes as both received the highest praise from their international peers for the quality and depth of their programs of research and its impact on patient and family care. The Faculty is indeed fortunate to have these two rising stars.

In addition, Associate Professors Arlene Bierman and Kelly Metcalfe have been promoted to full professor, while Clinician Scientist and Assistant Professor (Status) Jennifer Stinson has been promoted to Associate Professor (Status), and Associate Professor Doris Howell has been reappointed to a further 5-year term as RBC Chair in Oncology Nursing at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Professor Bierman led the landmark POWER study that examined gender and health outcomes across multiple programs in Ontario. The results have shaped policy in the province from government to the health service delivery level and the methodology is being replicated around the world. Professor Bierman is currently an Atlantic Philanthropies Health and Aging Policy Fellow and American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, bringing her work directly to decision makers in Canada and the US.

The relevance and impact of Professor Metcalfe’s work on BCRA related breast cancer, genetic counselling and decision support for women was recently highlighted with the global media attention to the issue. Professor Metcalfe’s peers commented that every genetic counsellor in practice today will have been influenced by her research. She is clearly a leading authority in the field and a wonderful asset to the Faculty of Nursing. She was recently appointed as an expert on the US Preventative Services Task Force for their review of genetic testing and counseling for BCRA related cancer to develop recommendations for screening in the US.

Professor Jen Stinson  is an outstanding clinician scientist at SickKids whose work on technology supported self-management tools for adolescents in chronic pain has received international attention.  Her recent accomplishment, creating an iPhone app called Pain Squad to help children and teens report their pain symptoms has been recognized internationally and changed the way pain reporting is conducted. Her accomplishments are truly remarkable.

Finally, Associate Professor Doris Howell has been an outstanding inaugural RBC chair at Princess Margaret Hospital. She has created a broad interdisciplinary program of research well supported by Tri-Council and CCO funds that has enabled her to further her work on symptom management across multiple disease populations. Professor Howell’s model for symptom assessment and management has been taken up at UHN beyond the cancer world and she continues to have a direct impact on the care of patients at PMH.
