Financial Aid

Government Student Loans

For more information on costs and resources for international students, please visit the Centre for International Experience.

Domestic students in professional master’s and the DN programs can apply for government student loans such as the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) or other provincial loans. Students who are eligible for government loans may also qualify for the University of Toronto Financial Aid (UTAPS) grant.

International students are eligible to be considered for grant assistance. However, because Canada Immigration requires all international students to show that they have adequate resources before admitting them to Canada, a grant will normally be awarded only if there is evidence that the student’s circumstances have changed since his/her arrival. In no instance will the amount be sufficient to cover a student’s total university costs.

Scholarships and Awards

Several internal and external awards are available to incoming and continuing graduate students. These awards are given to students based on academic merit and/or financial need.

Admission Awards

Incoming Master’s and DN students (September 2024 intake) who complete an awards application form will be considered for all admission awards. By completing this application, you are requesting the faculty to consider you for any admissions award that you may be eligible. No additional documents are required.

Please note that only successful applicants for awards will receive a notification decision.

  • Master of Nursing Admission Awards: Accepted from November 15, 2023 to January 15, 2024.
  • Doctoral Admission Awards: Accepted from November 15, 2023 until April 30, 2024.

Additional Information

Financial Needs Assessment: To be considered for needs-based awards, applicants are required to complete the budget section of the award application form. If an applicant fails to demonstrate financial need, they will be considered for non-needs-based awards.

Saving and Completing your application:

Applicants cannot save a partially completed application. Please review our data collection statement before submitting.

Note: some fields on the application form are dependent on data entered in other fields and will only be displayed accordingly.

Do not include special characters in the file name or you will get a system error and will not be able to continue with the application process.

Continuing Graduate Students Scholarships and Awards

Internal and external awards are available to continuing students.  Awards and fellowships are given to students based on academic merit and/or financial need.

Note: Bloomberg Nursing reserves the right to not award any of the awards listed in a given year. The exact value and application date for awards may chance. Please use the list of awards as a guideline only.

Application Process

Current students applying for in-course or graduating awards may use one Award Application Form unless otherwise indicated. References may also be required for some awards. Please address specific award criteria in the last section of the application where you outline your academic, professional, and personal interests and achievements.

Applicants need not indicate which award they would like to be considered, since the faculty will determine this based on the award application and the area of nursing interest of the applicants.

Teaching Assistant Positions

Qualified Professional Master’s and DN students can apply for Teaching Assistant positions to help provide additional income. Students holding TA positions can have a range of responsibilities, depending on their TA assignment. Responsibilities may include grading, supporting simulation lab activities, and leading in-person tutorials. Some TA positions offer the opportunity to serve as course instructors, guest lecturers, and clinical instructors (in a hospital or community setting).

Student Crisis Fund

The Student Crisis Fund provides short term financial assistance to currently registered students who encounter an unanticipated serious financial emergency beyond their control, that jeopardizes their ability to complete the program. The fund is given in the form of a one-time bursary.

The fund should not be considered a source of routine or long-term funding. It is expected that prior to requesting crisis funds, students first consider other sources of funding available to them.

Who is eligible?

Students currently enrolled in the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. All students including part-time (PM-NP), funded/non-funded PhD, and international students are eligible.

What is the funding amount?

Funds are determined on a case-by-case basis.

How do I apply?

Students are encouraged to meet with a faculty member or the Registrar to complete an online request form together.  Students will need to provide the following information:

  • The nature of their emergency/crisis
  • The amount being requested
  • Student’s long-term plan (i.e., how will the student ensure financial security if given crisis funds)
