Advanced Health Assessment and Therapeutic Management 1

This course will focus on the development of nurse practitioner (NP) practice in advanced health assessment and therapeutic planning as they pertain to clients’ presentation of common health and illness symptoms. Discussions and topics will include interventions to stabilize the client in urgent, emergent, and life-threatening situations, as well as the application of health promotion and illness prevention activities using a collaborative approach through co-creation with clients and families. There is a focus on advanced practice assessment, diagnosis, management, counselling, therapeutic planning, managing transitions of care, and health related documentation. A review of NP responsibilities aligned with prescribing drugs and substances, which include assessment, prescribing, and follow up of clients requiring Controlled Drugs and Substances is addressed throughout the course. Critical appraisal through the application of relevant research and best practice guidelines will highlight the NP role as one of a clinician, leader, advocate, educator, and scholar. Course content and nurse practitioner entry to practice clinical competencies will be applied in practice through the required clinical practicum component.
