A participant of the Certificate Program in Leadership and Management at Bloomberg Nursing’s Centre for Professional Development (CPD), Peter Su (MN-Clinical 2020) shares how a redirection changed his career path.

For Peter Su, a career in nursing leadership wasn’t the original plan, but it turned out to be the best decision for him. Over the past decade, Su has built a fulfilling career in healthcare, where every step has brought him closer to the kind of impact he wants to make. What began as a redirection has now become a purposeful journey grounded in care, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Recently, Su completed the Certificate Program in Leadership and Management at Bloomberg Nursing’s Centre for Professional Development (CPD). This was a valuable experience that helped him grow professionally and explore new opportunities.

On choosing life-long learning with CPD

After completing his Master of Nursing from Bloomberg Nursing in 2020, Su knew his learning journey wasn’t over. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and to move forward in leadership, he needed something practical, flexible, and relevant to his career aspirations in nursing and healthcare. That’s where CPD came in.

During his graduate studies, Su completed an elective course by Leasa Knechtel – the Executive Director of CPD – whom he trusted to design, develop, and deliver high-quality education.

“Knowing Leasa was leading the CPD program gave me confidence in the quality of the courses. I knew it would be well-organized, relevant, and engaging,” says Su.

The Certificate Program in Leadership and Management enhances participants’ knowledge and expertise in managing and leading clinical teams to support excellence in patient care, high performance operations, and healthy work environments. Each course is approved as a micro-credential with eCampus Ontario, and participants are eligible for membership benefits and advanced standing towards achieving their Certified Health Executive (CHE) credential with the Canadian College of Health Leaders

Su was especially drawn to the program’s course content which goes beyond general business management to focus specifically on leadership in healthcare settings. Modules on financial planning, human resource management, and change leadership helped him understand the bigger picture of how healthcare organizations function.

“The program gave me a solid foundation in management principles while keeping everything tied to real-life healthcare situations,” says Su.

Growing professionally after certification

Su didn’t take courses just to add a certificate to his resume, he was looking for skills he could apply in his career. After completing just two courses, Su secured a new role as the Quality Improvement Specialist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), where he applies the knowledge and skills he gained with CPD on a daily basis.

CPD’s flexible, online format made it possible for Su to study at his own pace while working full-time. But even with that flexibility, the course structure kept him motivated and on track.

“I appreciated how the program was designed with working professionals in mind. I could manage my time and still feel supported throughout the program,” says Su.

Beyond the technical skills, courses in the Certificate Program for Leadership and Management helped him organize and apply frameworks to the knowledge he had gained through experience, giving him a stronger voice in leadership conversations and a clearer direction for future growth.

“It helped me put structure to what I’ve learned on the job,” says Su. “Now, I can approach challenges with more clarity, confidence, and intention.”
