The highlight of the year for many alumni, Bloomberg Nursing’s Spring Reunion 2013 brought together a boisterous, cheery group. Graduates from 1942/43 mingled with recent 2012 graduates – and everyone in between – and attendees from all years thoroughly enjoyed the event. Saturday, June 1, 2013 started off with a flurry of activity with a 9:00 a.m. breakfast with good food, good conversation and fond remembrances. Mrs. Peggy (Mary) Margaret Fuller, a 71 year alumni of the Faculty, and Mrs. Madeline Smillie, a 70 year alumni of the Faculty, shared their nursing experiences with the room. After breakfast and class photos, guests moved into the 6th floor auditorium as Dean Sioban Nelson honoured the classes with years ending in 8 and 3: 1933, ‘38, ‘43, ‘48, ‘53, ‘58, ‘63, ‘68, ‘73, ‘78, ‘83, ‘88, ‘93, ‘98, ‘03 and 2008 and presented the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Awards.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards provide peers and colleagues with the opportunity to nominate alumni who have made great achievements in their field of nursing. This year honoured another notable group, who have contributed to nursing and health care in immeasurable ways. Gillian Strudwick was honoured with Bloomberg Nursing’s Rising Star Award and Dr. Joy Richards was honoured with Bloomberg Nursing’s Award of Distinction. Jenny Ploeg and Tracey DasGupta were presented with Bloomberg Nursing’s Distinguished Alumnus Award and all spoke passionately about their commitment to nursing.
The morning rounded out with the opportunity for alumni to tour the Nursing Simulation Lab (Sim Lab) Tour. Graduates made their way through the 4,000 sq. foot state-of-the-art teaching facility where student volunteers gave demonstrations of the Sim Lab’s capabilities. The Class of 5T3 were especially impressed with the technology of the Sim Lab and how it helps to educate nursing students in patient care.
Nursing alumni made Spring Reunion another huge success. Thank you to all who attended and we look forward to next year’s celebration.
