Bloomberg Nursing BScN student Andrea Magalhaes receives prestigious Sopman Humanitarian Award

24 May 2018

Bloomberg Nursing BScN student Andrea Magalhaes has been named a recipient of the 2018 Sopman Humanitarian Award from the University Health Network. The Sopman Humanitarian Fund seeks to encourage humanity, compassion, understanding, and the ability to communicate amongst nurses and doctors in training at the University Health Network.

Inspired by the nursing care her mom received after she was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer, Andrea chose to attend the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing to pursue nursing as a career.  She attributes her personal experiences with giving her a deeper understanding and ability to empathize and care for her patients and their families.

“This award is incredibly meaningful to me,” Andrea said. “My biggest goal in life is to provide care that is empathetic and to treat people with love and respect. I am extremely grateful and honored to accept this award.”

Named after the late Belle Sopman, the award was established by her husband Archie Sopman in recognition of the humanitarian care given to his wife by a student nurse. Nominated by Assistant Professor Craig Dale, Andrea’s nomination reflected her distinguished work during a placement at Princess Margaret Hospital.
