Samantha Mayo, a researcher in the area of hematological cancer survivorship, has been awarded the CANO/ACIO-Pfizer Award of Excellence in Nursing Research from the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology.
Mayo who is also the RBC Financial Group Chair in Oncology Nursing Research, an associate professor at the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, and co-lead of the newly established Oncology Nursing Research Centre of Excellence at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, is being recognized for the transformative impact of her scholarship on oncology nursing practice.
“I am grateful to be recognized by my peers in oncology research and join those who have made a lasting impact. This award is indicative of the strength of oncology research in Canada, and I look forward to seeing the ways in which nurses will continue to advance the care and support of patients and families through research,” says Mayo.
Currently, Mayo is co-designing and testing new models of care that improve symptom management for patients with cancer-related cognitive impairment and is also examining the trajectory of psychosocial and functional outcomes for non-Hodgkin lymphoma survivors, one of the fastest growing groups of cancer survivors in the world. Mayo’s commitment to patient-oriented research that informs survivorship care, and ensures their needs are understood, is a testament to her vision and her inspirational leadership as a nursing researcher.
