  • Applicants to the PhD and MN programs at the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing should complete the following application in order to be considered for the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing Admission Awards. Applicants may also want to visit the SGS Awards page to learn more about the array of awards available to graduate students at the University of Toronto. By completing this application, you are requesting the faculty to consider you for any admissions award that you may be eligible. No other additional documents are required since the academic transcripts and letters of reference are required for application to the program. The faculty has a number of admissions awards, which can be found on our website. Applicants need not indicate which award they would like to be considered, since the faculty will determine this based on the admission application and the area of nursing interest of the applicants. Please note that many of these awards have residency and financial need requirements. We encourage all eligible applicants to complete the admissions award application form. Please note that only successful applicants for awards will receive a notification decision.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How are Faculty of Nursing admissions awards allocated to students?

    The Faculty of Nursing Admissions Committee assesses incoming student applications and assigns all awards.  Some awards are allocated based on academic achievement or merit, while others are allocated based on financial need. For example, half of our ~22 Schulich awards ($9,000 each) are given to students based on merit, and half are allocated based on student financial need.

    What programs are included?

    All incoming full-time Masters of Nursing (including Nurse Practitioner) students will receive an award.  Part-time Post Masters Nurse Practitioner Diploma students are not included in the program.

    Are students currently enrolled in the program eligible?

    No.  Only students starting the program in 2019-2020 are eligible for an admission award.

    Are part-time students eligible (e.g., Post Masters Nurse Practitioner Diploma)?

    No.  The award guarantee only applies to incoming full-time students.

This award is intended to meet the current need in priority areas for graduate nursing education and to build graduates in emerging areas.     Glenn H. Carter Graduate Fellowships in Nursing (GSEF)

    Donor: Glenn H. Carter and others Entry or in-course student applicants must meet at least ONE of the following criteria:

    • Master’s students with at least three years full-time employment as an RN working at the bedside
    • Master’s students in the Nurse Practitioner Program with at least three years full-time employment as an RN working at the bedside
    • PhD students with at least five years full-time employment as an RN working at the bedside

    Candidates may be considered who do not meet the prerequisites above but are deemed by the faculty to have the equivalent in education and directly related work experience. Award Preferences: In addition to the above prerequisites, preference will be given to students who meet the following criteria:

    • Demonstrated leadership/supervisory skills and critical thinking
    • Demonstrated interest in preventative health care including, but not limited to, diet, nutrition, exercise and healthy living
    • Demonstrated compassion for persons-in-need with particular reference to the elderly, paediatrics, and veterans

    Ontario Graduate Scholarship

    The Government of the province of Ontario offers a number of graduate scholarships. Applicants must have a high level of academic achievement with first-class standing. Applications and related documents must be submitted in early fall for the subsequent academic year. Incoming graduate students submit applications directly, or through their undergraduate university.     Patricia Lyon Nursing Fellowship

    Donor: Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Nursing Funds Award(s) offered to full-time in the Master’s degree or Doctoral program of the Graduate Department of Nursing Science whose studies are consistent with the goals of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TRI) and/or will further the strategic directions of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Academic merit will be considered. Preference will be given to employees of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.     Perinatal Nurses of Southern Ontario Fellowship in Women’s Health (OSOTF)

    Donor: Perinatal Nurses of Southern Ontario Awarded on the basis of financial need to a graduate student enrolled in the Master’s or PhD program in the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing.     Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST)

    There are a number of QEII-GSST awards to be awarded to a student(s) on the basis of academic excellence. Students must be either Canadian citizens or permanent residents and have maintained an overall A- average over the last two years of study at the post-secondary level. Recipients should also exhibit research ability/potential, good communication skills and interpersonal/leadership abilities. For application information, please visit SGS QEII-GSST page. There is no separate application for this award. Recipients will be chosen from the OGS applicants. Please see Ontario Graduate Scholarship above Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (QEII-GSST) Donor: Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Preference will be given to doctoral student(s) enrolled in the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing studying in the area of psychiatric or addictions nursing or other areas of mental health. Dorothy and Bill Palm (QEII-GSST) Donor: Women’s College Hospital Foundation Preference to student(s) whose graduate supervisor is affiliated with the Women’s College Research Institute (WCRI) at Women’s College Hospital. Reporting: The successful candidate will submit a written report to Women’s College Research Institute at the end of the award year describing the research undertaken during the year and any other such information as the candidate may judge to be of interest. A copy of the report will be made to the Women’s College Hospital Foundation. Heart and Stroke Foundation (QEII-GSST) Donor: Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Preference will be given to doctoral student(s) enrolled in the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing studying in the areas of cardiac and stroke research and practice or associated areas.     Rosella Cunningham Memorial Fellowship

    Seymour Schulich Graduate Student Awards in Nursing

    Thora (Jerry) Gerow Nurse Practitioners Scholarship Donor: Estate of Thora Rebecca Gerow The award is offered to (a) Nurse Practitioner(s) who will focus on primary care settings and/or care throughout the life of individuals, families and communities on the basis of academic merit.     University of Toronto Fellowship – Nursing Science

    Available to full-time Master’s (year one and year two) and Doctoral (year one to year five) degree students with at least a B+ academic standing in each of their last two years of study. Students receiving a total of $15,000 either from external sources or awards administered by the University are not eligible for this Fellowship. Value: Varies | Application not required


    Zophia Nurse Practitioner Fellowship (OSOTF II)

    Donor: Nursing Faculty/Staff/Alumni/Friends Award(s) to a student in the Master’s and/or post-Master’s program on the basis of academic merit and financial need, who is/are entering or continuing their study as a Nurse Practitioner.
