
Teaching Assistants

University of Toronto graduate students are invited to apply each year for Teaching Assistant (TA) positions for the fall, winter and spring/summer terms at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. Preference in hiring is given to graduate Nursing students enrolled in the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Toronto or those who have made application to be enrolled in the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Toronto. If you are also interested in applying for a Clinical Instructor position, you will need to apply separately.
Please note: you must be legally entitled to work in Canada and be enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Toronto (Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing students preferred) during the work period in order to be considered for a TA position. HR Practices & Policies
Successful applicants for a Teaching Assistant position will be sent an email to the address specified in their original TA applications. As per the CUPE Local 3902 Unit 1 Collective Agreement, successful applicants for positions commencing in September will receive a written Notice of Appointment by August 1. Successful applicants for positions commencing in January will receive a written Notice of Appointment by December 1. Successful applicants for positions starting in the summer term will receive a written Notice of Appointment by April 22. Only successful applicants will be contacted. UofT graduate students will be paid the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 rate. As a graduate student, you will be a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3902, Unit 1 bargaining unit (SGSI for MN students, SGSII for PhD students). Your employment will be governed by the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University of Toronto and CUPE Local 3902.
Information about the Union found on the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 union website represents the views of the Union and has not been approved or endorsed by the University.
The current CUPE 3902 Unit 1 rates of pay are posted on the university’s Human Resources website.

TA Hiring Package
- Letter of Offer– Please sign and complete all sections of the letter that will be emailed to you if you are offered a position
- Employee Information Form– Complete this form for every term with contact information for your personnel file.
- Void Cheque– A void cheque or a direct deposit form from the bank must be submitted with every new hiring package.
- Tax Forms, TD1 and TD1ON – Tax forms are to be completed once every calendar year, unless there are changes. Re-hires do not submit tax forms if they already provided forms in the same calendar year of January to December. Tax-Related Questions? For any specific questions related to your personal tax situation, we also recommend contacting Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) directly.
- Health and Safety Awareness Training and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Training – All employees of the University of Toronto are required to participate in a basic health and safety awareness and AODA training via the online learning portal (Quercus). This training can be completed in Quercus when the contract is in effect. Upon completion of this training, please notify the Office of the Associate Dean, Academic.
- For CUPE3902 members, there is also a welcome letter from the union.
Paperwork related to Duties
- Description of Duties and Allocation of Hours Form (DDAH) – This form is completed by the faculty supervisor and signed by both the Teaching Assistant and the faculty supervisor. The form should be completed before the start of the course (or within the first two weeks of the course at the latest). *This form does not necessarily need to be submitted with the hiring package but can be included if already completed.
- CUPE 3902 Training Request Form – If you are a first-time Teaching Assistant at the University of Toronto, you are required to complete four hours of mandatory training. TAs will be paid for participation in this training and will be included in the hours for the TA contract. If you have contracts for multiple courses, you only need one of your faculty supervisors to sign the training request form prior to training. Please take this with you to your training and have it signed by the seminar leader or ask if the seminar leader will be sending the Faculty of Nursing an attendance sheet. All forms must be completed immediately upon completion of training. Once a year in August/September the Faculty of Nursing hosts a training session at 155 College Street. You are strongly encouraged to attend this session. Alternatively you can complete your mandatory training at another Teaching Assistants’ Training Program (TATP) session. If you possess a work-study permit as an international student, please be advised that, in order to prevent any disruption in your work and payment, you must provide the Faculty of Nursing with an update on your status at least one month before the expiry date.
