    This one-day workshop will provide an overview of gender development and identity across the lifespan, with a focus on the unique health care considerations for gender diverse and gender expansive individuals. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and work through case based scenarios to enhance their understanding of, and develop an affirming approach to this diverse population. Content will address relevant assessment, clinical reasoning, and management for the care of children/youth and adults who identify as gender diverse or gender expansive. This workshop has been developed by and will be presented by practitioners with expertise and experience working with transgender and non-binary patients and families from childhood to older adulthood.

    Course Outcomes

    By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

    1. Describe major concepts and definitions in gender care.
    2. Recall the stages and timing of the development of gender identity.
    3. Discuss and apply a gender affirming approach to the care of patients and families across the lifespan.
    4. Identify the unique healthcare needs of gender diverse patients.
    5. Apply appropriate clinical management, including assessment, clinical reasoning, and diagnostic and prescribing practices for this population.

    Intended Audience

    Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Nurses and other practitioners caring for clients who identify as gender diverse or gender expansive.

    Cathy Maser, MN, NP-Paediatric
    Team Lead, Transgender Youth Clinic

    Sick Kids Hospital

    Cathy has been a paediatric nurse for her entire career, working at The Hospital for Sick Children for the past 30 years in the Cardiac Critical Care unit, the Division of Neonatology, the Acute Care Transport Team and the Emergency Department.

    Since obtaining her Master of Nursing degree at the University of Toronto in 2007, she has been working as a Nurse Practitioner in the Division of Adolescent Medicine. Her clinical focus is with youth with chronic illness, substance misuse, sexual health, gender identity and minor mood disorders.

    Cathy is a founding member of the Transgender Youth Clinic since it’s opening in October 2013. She is Team Lead for the clinic and is actively involved in partnerships within the transgender care community and often provides education to schools, parents, health care providers and community agencies on adolescent brain development, mental health, substance use and gender diverse identities.

    Cathy was also on faculty at the Lawrence S Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto as a Lecturer in the Undergraduate and Nurse Practitioner programs for 12 years.

    Emery Potter, NP-PHC, BScN, MN (they/them)  
    Women’s College Hospital

    Emery is the clinical program lead of the Transition Related Surgery Program at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, Canada. They previously worked at Sherbourne Health Centre where they were integral to many initiatives and programs that increased access to quality health care for trans and gender diverse individuals including the provision of medical transition care as well as building primary care capacity throughout Ontario through training and mentorship.  They have almost two decades of experience in primary care with a focus on a diverse range of issues including HIV, mental health, homeless care, mobile health, hepatitis C and trans health.

    • Refund Policy – To withdraw from the course and receive a refund, your written request must be emailed to pd.nursing@utoronto.ca by April 3, 2020. No refunds will be given after this date. All refunds are subject to an administration fee of $100 + tax. As an alternative, a colleague may attend in your place. Please send your substitution request at least 7 days before the course.
    • Advanced registration is required. Registration deadline: April 28, 2020.
    • U of T Nursing Alumni discount is available to BScN, MN, PMNP Diploma, MScN or PhD graduates of the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto.
    • U of T Nursing Faculty discount is available to individuals with a faculty position, adjunct or status appointment, or are a Clinical Instructor (current academic year only) at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto.

    • Course Cancellation Policy – The University reserves the right to cancel courses due to unavailability of instructors, facilities or insufficient enrolment. Decisions on course cancellations are made at least 15 calendar days prior to the course starting date, so early registration is recommended. If you enroll in a course that is subsequently cancelled, you may transfer to another section of that course if an alternative is available; or you may receive a full refund.
