Alumni share experiences with students at annual Networking with Nurses

7 February 2017

On February 6, 2017, the Student Lounge on the 3rd floor of the Health Sciences building was bustling with excitement as over 60 Bloomberg Nursing students met with alumni mentors at the annual Networking with Nurses event. Taking place during University of Toronto’s Mentorship Week, the event connected students with U of T Nursing graduates who volunteered their time to share their career successes and challenges with the future nurses.

The event provided the students the opportunity to be exposed to different viewpoints on the nursing profession and hear first-hand accounts of what they may experience as they embark on their careers.

Throughout the afternoon, the room buzzed with voices sharing professional wisdom and planning for the future. Alumni mentors agreed to be available for the next two weeks by email to answer any questions the students have.

Mentors included:

Daniel Di Marco –  Registered Nurse, Intensive Care Unit, Sunnybrook Health Sciences

Helen Edwards – Director, Clinical Informatics and Technology Nursing, Sick Kids Hospital

Bonnie Fleming – Carroll – Associate Chief of Nursing & Inter-Professional Education, Sick Kids Hospital

Mary Glavassevich – Patient Care Manager, Surgical Oncology, Sunnybrook Health Sciences & Adjunct Lecturer Faculty of Nursing

Kristel Guthrie – Health Promotion Specialist, Needle Exchange, Toronto Public Health

Ryan Henderson – Registered Nurse, Emergency Room,  St. Michael’s Hospital

Anne Jackson – Professor of Nursing for International Students, Seneca College

Moya Johnson – Coordinator for CARTR (Canadian Assisted Reproductive Technology Registry) & Municipal Councillor for Halton Hills

Stephanie de Young – Nursing Manager/ Centre for Global Child Health, Sick Kids Hospital

This well-attended event is a favourite amongst students and alumni alike, and we look forward to hosting more Networking with Nurses events in the coming years. Thank you to all who attended!
