    Students at Bridgepoint:

I had hands on practice, which will remain with me for the rest of my nursing career.

    – Bridgepoint Nursing Student

Deeply committed to nursing education, from a student’s first clinical placement through to the post graduate level, Bridgepoint has increased our numbers of preceptored nursing students over 500% since 2007. Supported by our in-house mentorship program, our nursing staff’s commitment to teaching is reflected in the doubling of nursing student numbers in that same time period. Students greatly appreciate the scaffolded independence our preceptor nurses provide.

Students routinely praise our hands-on, two-day orientation process supported by an easy to access online component that students can review prior to their arrival.

In addition to basic orientation, our website provides information for students to participate in interprofessional education – a foundation for true collaborative patient-centred care. Students can learn with, from and about over a dozen disciplines at Bridgepoint’s Interprofessional Lunches which have been accredited by the Centre for IPE at the University of Toronto.  The day-to-day teamwork that all students experience at Bridgepoint is often mentioned in their evaluations.

When Bridgepoint’s new building opens in spring 2013, students will work in a state-of-the-art setting that will enable increased excellence in clinical interprofessional education.

    Markham Stouffville Hospital

Markham Stouffville Hospital is a progressive, two-site, community hospital with leading diagnostic services and clinical programs in acute care medicine and surgery, addictions and mental health, and maternal and child health. Partnering with other specialist providers, the hospital’s 330 physicians and 1,800 staff make it the centre of community care for the residents of the City of Markham and the Towns of Stouffville and Uxbridge.

In 2013, Markham Stouffville Hospital’s expansion will open its doors, doubling the size of the current hospital, with an expanded emergency department, expanded diagnostic imaging centre, enhanced maternal child program and expanded mental health services. The hospital will then undergo significant renovations to the existing building, ensuring the hospital continues to meet the needs of these growing communities.

North York General Hospital (NYGH) is one of Canada’s leading community academic hospitals. We provide an exceptional care experience for our patients and their families, and have proudly served our diverse communities in North Toronto and beyond since 1968.

NYGH offers a wide range of acute care, ambulatory and long-term care services at three sites: the General site (4001 Leslie Street); the Branson Site (555 Finch Avenue West); and Seniors’ Health Centre (2 Buchan Court). Our regional programs serve all of south central Ontario.

Our staff, physicians and volunteers have a history of transforming health care to better serve our patients. We are leaders who adopt the most innovative health information technology, strategists who carefully chart patient flow and find ways to reduce wait times, and visionaries who dream of, and work towards, the ideal patient experience. Southlake Regional Health Centre

Southlake Regional Health Centre is a full-service hospital with a regional, clinically advanced focus. Southlake offers almost 400 patient beds and accommodates approximately more than 86,000 visits to the Emergency Department, 22,000 inpatient admissions, and 600,000 out-patient visits each year.

As a regionally designated site, Southlake is responsible for developing and providing advanced levels of care to the more than one million people who reside in York Region, Simcoe County, and in some cases, as far north as Muskoka. Advanced, specialty services include cardiac care, cancer care, child and adolescent eating disorders, mental health services for children, paediatrics and perinatal care, thoracic and cataract surgery, and arthritis care.

The Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake serves as the designated cancer treatment centre for almost 1.2 million people living in York Region and south Simcoe County. A full range of services including diagnostics, surgery, chemotherapy, support services, and clinical trials are provided throughout the Southlake campus. And, for the first time, instead of driving to a downtown Toronto hospital, cancer patients in York Region and south Simcoe County have access to radiation therapy close to home.

Southlake has announced its plans to formalize its training initiatives by becoming a Ministry-designated teaching and research centre. The Hospital is currently affiliated with the University of Toronto in the training of medical residents as part of the Academic Family Health Team at Southlake and, in addition, has developed a partnership with York University to bring ground-breaking research projects to the Hospital through the creation of the Research Institute at Southlake.

The effects of Southlake’s growth on the local economy are obvious. Southlake is creating jobs in the health care sector, as well as in the peripheral industries. People move to this neighborhood knowing that world-class medical treatment is available close to where they live.

Southlake is proud to have a team of more than 3,000 employees, 540 physicians, and 890 volunteers. Combined with our commitment to provide the best possible care to patients, our goal is to make Southlake synonymous with health care excellence.

    Students and Trainees

Students and trainees enrolled in health professional training programs, as well as those involved in advanced or graduate clinical preparation, select St. Joseph’s Health Centre for the unique opportunities available in a community teaching facility and for the interprofessional education and practice model that reflects a commitment to excellence, development, competence and accountability. St. Joseph’s provides extensive student education opportunities for medical trainees, nursing students and students from a wide variety of other health professional programs.

St. Joseph’s Health Centre is committed to excellence in education. It is our vision to be the best community teaching hospital in Canada, and supporting nursing education plays a prominent role in this vision. It is also one of our key strategic priorities to partner in educating the next generation of health professionals. We are pleased to be able to offer a wide variety of clinical placements, and we endeavor to make our students’ time at St. Joseph’s an outstanding learning opportunity.

Nursing students complete an orientation, which covers site specific areas of nursing practice and policy. While on site, many students also have the opportunity to complete supplementary observation sessions. These may include observing members of the team who work in different professions, observing in a different unit/area of practice, or observing a specific procedure/surgery that is relevant to their learning goals. Our students also enjoy access to our library, Chapel, multifaith room and our wellness centre (gym) at the staff rate.
