  • How to prepare for your supplementary application

    The BLOOMBERG NURSING supplementary application is a portal for applicants to submit personal statement, references and prerequisite course assessment form online.

    Personal Statement

    You will be asked to respond to a few questions that demonstrate your vision and knowledge of nursing. You will also be asked to indicate your Academic History, Leadership and Community Involvement, and Significant Accomplishments. There is no model answer or format in preparing for your personal statement. Please be original and share your thoughts with us on nursing and health care.

    Academic and Work-related References

    You will be asked to provide your referees’ email addresses. Your referees will then be invited to submit references electronically.

    NB: Your academic reference should be from someone who has taught and graded you in a university course. Your work-related reference should be from someone who has supervised you in a paid or volunteer position.

    How can I find out if my referees have submitted references successfully? You can check if your referees have submitted references successfully to us by logging in the FIRST IN NURSING Supplementary Application. Please ensure that your referees submit references by February 15, 2016.

    Prerequisite Course Assessment

    You will be asked to self-report course information (e.g. course number, course title, course weight and date of completion) for each of your prerequisite courses in the online prerequisite course assessment form.

    Please ensure that you have completed the relevant courses with acceptable course weight. A full course typically runs from September to April. A half course runs from September to December, or January to April. 2 half courses are considered equivalent to 1 full course. If you have additional courses that can fulfill a given prerequisite, select the courses where you were most recent and/or most successful.

    It is acceptable if you have not completed all your prerequisite courses at the time of your application. However, you must fill in information of the course and the expected date of completion. Since our review process will end at the end of June, we highly courage applicants to enrol in any outstanding prerequisite course by the Winter term and submit final grades by the end of May.

    Don’t see your course listed in the equivalency list? It may still be acceptable. Obtain a detailed course syllabus and review the syllabus carefully to ensure that the course covers all of the appropriate topics listed in Admissions Requirements. When you complete your FIRST IN NURSING supplementary application, attach a copy of the syllabus for prerequisite course assessment.

    Electronic Transcripts

    In order to facilitate our admission review process, please upload a copy of transcript for each of the universities you have attended. Please note that the electronic transcripts submitted in the supplementary application cannot replace the submission of official transcripts. Please ensure to follow the procedures on how to submit official transcripts in the section entitled BScN Required Documents.

    Admission Awards Application

    Applicants who would like to be considered for admission awards can fill in the online awards application in the FIRST IN NURSING supplementary application portal. Please refer to FELLOWSHIPS & AWARDS for more details.

  • How to submit official transcripts and other documents required?

    Official Transcripts

    You are required to submit an official transcript for each post-secondary institution you have attended by February 15, 2016.

     UT Transcripts

    If you have an academic record at the University of Toronto since September 1998, you are not required to order a U of T Transcript. By completing your application, you agree to allow us to review your academic record available at ROSI for academic assessment.

    NB: Courses taken at the School of Continuing Studies (SCS), University of Toronto are not recorded in ROSI.  You are required to arrange official transcripts from the School of Continuing Studies (SCS), University of Toronto to be sent to Enrolment Services (Refer to All Other Transcripts for details).

    Ontario Transcripts

    Transcripts from Ontario Colleges and Universities must be received via the Ontario Universities’ Electronic Transcript System (EDI), OUAC. If you are attending or have previously attended an Ontario post-secondary institution, order your official transcripts by completing the OUAC Transcript Request Form (TRF). Please refer to OUAC and Enrolment Services for full details.

    All Other Transcripts

    All other transcript(s) and related academic documents must be sent directly to Enrolment Services, University of Toronto at the address below:

    Transcripts from institutions in China

    Applicants from China are required to have their final post-secondary transcripts and GaoKao results verified by the CDGDC China Qualifications Verification service.

    Other Documents

    You may be required to submit other documents such as Proof of English Facility by February 15, 2016.

    Proof of English Facility

    Applicants must check if they have met the University’s English language requirements. If you are required to submit proof of English Facility, official test scores must be sent directly to Enrolment Services by the testing agency no later than February 15, 2016.

    Documents from applicants educated outside of Canada

    While admissions requirements and application procedures are basically the same for all applicants, international and domestic applicants educated at non-Canadian institutions should note that their educational background will be assessed of equivalency to qualifications as outlined in Admissions Requirements before they can be considered for admission. Also, applicants educated outside of Canada may have to submit additional documents such as official English translations of academic records. Please refer to INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS and INTERNATIONAL STUDENT RESOURCES for more details.

  • How to prepare for my BScN entry once I have received an offer?

    Accepting the offer of Admission

    If you have been offered admission into our BScN program, you will receive an official acceptance package by mail. You must respond within two weeks of receipt of the admission package to secure your place in our program.

    Acceptance Procedure

    Offered Admission

    To accept our offer, please complete all of the following steps:

    1. Log into the OUAC application system and indicate your decision. If you are an internal applicant, please return the acceptance form in your official acceptance package.
    2. Submit a non-refundable tuition deposit of $500.00 via certified cheque or money order* in Canadian funds, payable to “The University of Toronto”, to secure your spot.

    Not been offered admission

    The Bloomberg Faculty’s Admissions Committee has reviewed all BScN applications. After careful consideration the Admissions Committee regrets that we cannot offer you admission. For more details please see Application Process.

    Clearing admission conditions

    If your offer of admission has condition(s), you are required to clear all condition(s) by the due date (usually July 15) indicated on your offer of admission letter. Failure to clear outstanding condition(s) may jeopardize your entry to the BScN Program.

    Criminal Record Check

    Clinical practice is a significant component of the undergraduate BScN program. Nursing students provide direct care to vulnerable patients/clients of all ages across a wide variety of hospital and community agencies. As of January 1, 2005 a clear criminal record check is required by the College of Nurses of Ontario for licensure as a Registered Nurse.

    All newly admitted BScN students must complete and pass a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Record Check. Failure to do so can jeopardize your entry to the BScN Program. Please refer to Police Record Check for more information. Updated information and full details will be sent to newly admitted students via email.


    All newly admitted students are required to complete Immunization Forms and medical test results before entering the BScN program. In order to comply with the Public Hospitals Act, other legislation, and to meet the requirements of the students’ nursing practice placement settings, the Immunization Forms must be completed in its entirety. Failure to do so can jeopardize your entry to the BScN Program. Please refer to BScN Immunization Forms for more information. Updated information and full details will be sent to newly admitted students via email.

    TCard, UT email and ACORN/ROSI

    Once you have accepted your offer, you should also get your TCard, UT email and ACORN/ROSI access prior to September. They are essential for your studies at the University of Toronto. Full details will be sent to new students via email.

    Fees, Registration, and Enrolment

    Please refer to Tuition & Fees for more information. Full details on fees and registration will be sent out to new students in July. Please note that courses will be automatically enrolled for incoming BScN students.


    Mandatory orientation days are usually scheduled on the first week of September. Please note that these orientation days are mandatory for newly admitted students. Full details will be sent to new students via email in July.

    GPA Calculation

    What is the grade average required to be competitive to enter the BScN Program?

    Minimum grade average required is a mid-B (3.0 GPA or 75%) in the final year of study of your university education. However, the BScN program is highly competitive. Most successful applicants have a grade average of at least B+ or higher in the final year of a 4-year degree program.

    I am pursuing the fourth year of my degree and grades for my final year will not be available until May, which courses will be considered for my grade average?

    Completed courses of your most recent year of studies (usually Fall term courses of year 4, Summer courses – if any, and Winter courses for year 3) will be considered for grade average calculation at the time of our admissions review. The Admissions Office will recalculate your final year average when you submit final transcripts with all completed grades.

    I am completing my Master’s degree. Will grades of my Master-level courses be considered for grade average calculation?

    No, only grades taken at the undergraduate level will be considered for grade average calculation. Master’s credentials will be considered as additional qualifications.

    I completed my degree already. But some of my prerequisite courses were taken in Year 1 and 2 of my degree, not the final year. Will my prerequisite courses taken in my junior years be considered for grade average calculation?

    Only completed courses in the final year will be considered for grade average calculation. However, grades for all prerequisite courses will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee carefully. Applicants are expected to have satisfactory grades in all prerequisite courses. Any grade below 60% is considered as unsatisfactory.

    Prerequisite Courses

    I already have a degree with completion of most prerequisite courses. However, I have not yet taken a human physiology course, can I still apply to the BScN program?

    Yes. While applicants are encouraged to complete all prerequisite courses before applying to the program, it is not uncommon for applicants to fulfill prerequisite courses in the Fall or Winter term prior to admission. Applicants, however, must submit interim transcript(s) of all outstanding prerequisite courses by the document deadline in February. Official final transcript(s) must be submitted by the end of the Winter term in May.

    SCS 2169 Basic Human Physiology offered by the School of Continuing Studies, University of Toronto is a good option for applicants who have not yet taken a human physiology course. It is offered online 3 times a year.

    I have completed my degree 7 years ago. Can the courses that I took 7 years ago be considered to fulfil the prerequisite course requirements? 

    In general, any relevant bachelor’s degree course offered by a recognised university may be considered. However, we highly recommend applicants who have been away from academia for over 5 years to take relevant degree courses as a refresher.

    Is a Music course considered as Humanities?

    Music courses that require analytical writing and critical thinking (eg. Music history, Music and Popular culture) can be considered as humanities. However, courses on instrumental and vocal performances are usually not considered.

    I have already taken an acceptable half course in human physiology. Another half course in human physiology that I would like to take is not listed in the equivalency list, may I know if the course will be accepted as a human physiology prerequisite?

    A course that is not listed in the Human Physiology equivalency list on our website may still be considered as an acceptable prerequisite. Please review course description of the course you plan to enrol in to ensure that studies of all systems of the human body are covered. Please refer to the description listed on our website and the description of SCS 2169 Basic Human Physiology for more details. We, however, cannot review any course description prior to application.

    I have taken some language courses for my bachelor’s degree, can they be considered to fulfil the humanities prerequisite requirement?

    The BScN program requires candidates with strong reading and writing skills in diverse disciplines in the humanities. Language courses that introduce students to grammatical structures, vocabulary and oral or written expression of a certain language often cannot provide the academic preparation in the humanities that we require from our students.

    However, many courses (usually senior-level courses) offered by various departments of languages focus on writing, reading, and critical thinking skills in the humanities. These courses will continue to be acceptable to fulfil the humanities prerequisite requirement. For example, French literature courses will be acceptable.


    Can a TA be considered as an academic referee?

    Usually no. Your academic referee should be a university professor who has taught and graded you in a university course.

    Can I submit 2 work-related references instead of 1 academic reference and 1 work-related reference?

    No. You are required to submit 1 academic reference, and 1 volunteer/work reference.

    Can I submit multiple academic references and work-related references?

    Yes. You can add multiple referees’ information in the online supplementary application. However, only 1 academic reference and 1 volunteer/work reference are required.

    Admission Offers

    When will I be notified whether I am admitted to the program?

    We will start issuing admission offers as early as late March until the end of June on an on-going basis.

    Is there a waiting list? When will students be notified if they are placed on a waiting list?

    Students who have been waitlisted will be notified by the end of June. Waitlisted students will be contacted from July until early September if there are spots available for them.
