Clinical Placements for Graduate Students
In our MN program, Clinical and Administration Fields, students are required to complete 170 clinical placement hours as part of NUR1072Y, the final consolidation course. These placements can be completed within a variety of practice settings including healthcare facilities and government agencies. Our preceptors are knowledgeable professionals with an interest in the advancement of graduate nursing students and many are clinical appointees of the faculty.
Our MN – NP and Post-Master NP programs are offered on-line and subsequently allow for a diversity of placement opportunities across Canada. While we can only guarantee placements in the province of Ontario, we are open and willing to assist students in arranging placements outside Ontario. NP students have been placed in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. Some chose placement in these areas in order to stay close to home, others chose to travel afar in order to obtain a unique practice experience relating to individualized practice interests. NP students who wish to complete a placement outside Ontario must negotiate the request with the NP Placement Coordinator far in advance of the placement with the understanding that if the placement cannot be arranged, the student will complete the placement in Ontario. Due to circumstances beyond our control we regret that we can no longer access placement settings in British Columbia. NP students are required to complete three clinical placement courses for a total of 700 clinical hours: 100 hours as part of the Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Reasoning course (NUR1101H, NUR1102H, or NUR1114H), 300 hours as part of the Advanced Nursing practice in Caring for Clients and Families course (NUR1115Y, NUR1116Y, or NUR1117Y) and 300 hours as part of Advanced Nursing practice in Caring for Clients and Families II course (NUR1110Y). Potential practice settings are diverse, ranging from care in community settings for at risk populations, to caring for clients in an ICU setting. The preceptors for the NP program include Nurse Practitioners and physicians, many with a clinical appointment at the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. The Graduate Placement Coordinator is available for consultation and guidance with respect to all placement-related questions (please email MNplacements@utoronto.ca). |
