Dr. Doris Howell has worked in cancer and palliative care for over 30 years in diverse roles as an advanced practice nurse, nurse administrator, consultant and nurse researcher. Dr. Howell’s program of research is predominantly focused on patient-centered interventions for complex symptoms and to address psychosocial responses to cancer. Her complex symptom focus is on understanding the influence of psychosocial variables, particularly the role of cognitive-appraisal, meaning of illness and symptoms, and implicit models of illness (illness representation/beliefs) on symptom intensity and distress outcomes. Dr. Howell also has an active health service research program focused on examining nurse-led and shared care models in cancer and palliative care and their impact on patient and health care system outcomes. Other research interests include uncovering nurses’ therapeutic role in improving patient-family experience of illness and how ways of nurse knowing can be advanced through reflection. Research expertise includes qualitative and quantitative methods, with specific expertise in qualitative methods (hermeneutic phenomenology) and mixed-method study designs. | ||||
