Dr. Nelson recently joined the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing in July 2009. Prior to joining the faculty, he served as the Associate Director of Public Health with the Monroe County Department of Public Health in Rochester, New York. Dr. Nelson’s program of research focuses on the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections among young mothers and men who have sex with men. Dr. Nelson’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Nelson also serves as the Chair of the Black Gay Research Group, an international interdisciplinary group of scholars focused on research that impacts the health of Black men who have sex with men, particularly as it relates research on HIV and other sexually transmissible infections.
Dr. Nelson is clinically trained in the primary care of families and completed a U.S. Maternal Child Health Bureau funded fellowship in adolescent health with the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. His clinical practice has been in various community based settings, including as a registered nurse in a sexual health clinic and correctional facility, and a family nurse practitioner in an adolescent health clinic. He has received numerous awards and grants for his research and clinical practice in the community.
Dr. Nelson teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. At present, he teaches the graduate course NUR 1035-Public and Population Health Perspectives; and the undergraduate course, NUR 461 Primary Health Care: Accessibility and Health section. He is currently the faculty advisor for the Graduate Nursing Student Society. |
