Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

The Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing has traditionally received many more applications for admission to our two year second entry program than the available space. There were approximately 800 applicants for 170 spaces for the September 2011 intake.

The selection of candidates is made through a careful and thorough decision making process by a committee of faculty. This is to ensure that students who are offered admission have both the potential for high academic achievement and a clear indication of aptitude and capability to be successful in this program.

Each of the applications is reviewed carefully and individually. In some cases successful applicants have remarkably impressive strengths in some areas yet demonstrate room for potential further growth in others.

The requirements for entry into this program, as listed in the admission process indicate the minimum prerequisites. In fact, almost all students offered admission for September 2011 had qualifications far above the minimum requirements.

• GPA of B+ or greater (based on grades of the final year of the bachelor's degree, or most recent 5 full university credits);
• Satisfactory grades in all prerequisite courses;
• In some cases a graduate degree from a relevant discipline, or a completed four year undergraduate degree, or were on-track for a June 2011 completion of a four year undergraduate degree;
• The ability to clearly articulate an awareness of the realities of the practice of nursing and the contribution of the profession of nursing to the health care system;
• Volunteer and/or paid employment positions in local, national or international settings that have provided substantial grounding for entry into the Bloomberg Faculty’s condensed and intensive nursing program; coupled with an ability to articulate the foundational nature of these experiences to entry into the nursing profession;
• References from academic and professional sources that ranked the applicants as exceptional or outstanding with consistency across a broad range of criteria.
