Verna Splane

In memoriam: Verna Huffman Splane

13 January 2015

Bloomberg Nursing is saddened to share news of the passing of Verna Huffman Splane  (Class of 3T9). Splane passed on Saturday, January 10, 2015, surrounded by caring nurses from the profession she loved. “Her final days were well-supported by nursing colleagues, and as long as she was able, she expressed great appreciation for her nursing community and worldwide group of friends,” says Sally Thorne, Professor at the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia. “She was very clear in feeling ready to die, and appreciative of feeling surrounded by long-time caring nurse colleagues. We have had many sweet and tender moments over these past few days of intensive support.”

Splane, best known for conducting the largest-ever study of senior nursing positions in more than 50 countries, celebrated her 100th birthday this past November, an occasion celebrated with her nursing colleagues. “Canada and the world have truly lost a giant in nursing leadership,” says Mike Villeneuve, Bloomberg Nursing Lecturer. “She was a wonderful mentor, leader, and to many, a friend.”

An overview of Splane’s life and career can be read here. Her obituary can be found in the Globe and Mail.
