Bloomberg Nursing Associate Professor Louise Rose has been appointed to the first Nursing Professorship at Sunnybrook in Toronto. Established by TD Bank Group, this new professorship focusses on conducting research to improve clinical outcomes for critical care patients. “This is a fantastic opportunity to be at the very hub of critical care and emergency services and teaching and to be in a position to further critical care research from an interprofessional perspective,” Professor Rose says.
Rose’s research interests are in critical care and emergency specialties with a focus on improving outcomes of mechanically ventilated patients through a variety of mechanisms, including symptom management in the critically ill. Her primary area of teaching interest is in acute care with particular interest in critical care and high dependency nursing. Within this specialty focus, she teaches advanced physiology and pathophysiology concepts as well as the application of relevant technology and multi-disciplinary interventions.
“Faculty and researchers at Bloomberg Nursing work at the cutting edge of nursing science,” says Linda Johnston, Dean of the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. “Professor Rose’s work will enhance research capacity at one of Ontario’s premiere care centres, contributing to improvements in critical care for patients across Ontario.”

Rose was awarded the inaugural appointment of the Lawrence Bloomberg Limited-Tenure Professorship in Critical Care in 2008. She holds a CIHR New Investigator Award and appointments as Director of Research at the Provincial Centre of Weaning Excellence at Toronto East General Hospital, and as adjunct scientist at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences, the Li Ka Shing Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and West Park Healthcare Centre.
Dr. Rose began her five-year term as the inaugural holder of the TD Professorship in Critical Care Nursing Research on June 2, 2014. A recognized leader in critical care, Sunnybrook has been referred to as Ontario’s ‘critical care central’, with the highest concentration of critical care resources in the province.
