Major Gains in the Field of Pain: Dr. Michael McGillion Receives Early Career Award from Canadian Pain Society

12 December 2012

For the second straight year, the Canadian Pain Society (CPS) has awarded their prestigious Early Career Award to a member of Bloomberg Nursing faculty.  Dr. Michael McGillion is the recipient of this honour for his tireless contributions in the study and advancement of improving care for people living with persistent forms of cardiac pain.

He joins the ranks of distinguished Bloomberg Nursing faculty members including Dr. Jennifer Stinson, who won the award in 2012, and Dr. Bonnie Stevens who received the award in 1996, just one year after the CPS launched the award.

“To be chosen from a very strong group of nominees form across Canada means a lot,” said Dr. McGillion. “It’s early days, this field of study is in its infancy and there’s much to be done in terms of developing solutions for people living with persistent forms of cardiac pain, which are not responsive to conventional treatments.”

In just six years of completing his doctoral degree, Dr. McGillion has been a major contributor and a leader in the field of persistent cardiac pain.  His expertise precedes him internationally and he is breaking new ground and finding creative solutions to manage such forms of pain, which are becoming more prevalent in our aging society and yet often misdiagnosed.

Dr. McGillion will receive his award on May 2, 2013 in Winnipeg, MB and will also deliver a keynote address at the Canadian Pain Society annual scientific meeting.

Congratulations to Dr. McGillion for this significant achievement.
