The Bram and Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library filled to capacity on November 5 for Bloomberg Nursing’s 2013 Student Awards Ceremony. One of the key highlights of the academic year, the Ceremony brought donors and award recipients together to celebrate the accomplishments of the Faculty’s undergraduate and graduate students. The evening, made possible through donor support, was filled with students, donors, alumni, faculty and family thrilled to honour the next generation of nurse leaders.
Opening remarks by Acting Dean Ellen Hodnett congratulated award recipients on their hard work and the impact their nursing careers will have on the future of patient care. Now able to focus more on their studies, and less on student debt, award recipients expressed their desire to make a difference at all levels of nursing.
“Our donors believe in building a healthier future for Canadians, and improving the health care system as a whole,” said Hodnett, who held the Heather M. Reisman Chair in Perinatal Nursing Research, the first endowed chair in nursing research in Canada. “By supporting nursing education they are making a major contribution to the future of Canadian health care, and we thank them for their commitment to our nursing students.”
One new way for nursing students to receive support is through the Esther Tang Memorial Scholarship. Created in memory of Esther Tsang by her son, Mr. Ricky Lie Ken Jie, the award fosters the growth of a deserving student who has the capacity to make a difference in patient care.
The Awards Ceremony also saw the first Dean’s Scholarship, awarded at the BScN level, to undergraduate student Yume Kobayashi. This international scholarship recognizes the financial costs associated with undertaking a nursing education in another country and assists eligible students to ensure they can study at the university of their choice.
Over 175 undergraduate and graduate students walked across the stage in recognition for their commitment to nursing at the 2013 Student Awards Ceremony. Thank you to all who attended for your support to the nursing community and for contributing to ease the financial burden of our outstanding students.
