A record number of attendees meant a new, larger venue was required. As a result, the event was held at the lovely Bram & Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library. The atmosphere hummed with pride from beaming guests and humble honourees. As each award was read, the room thundered with applause and acknowledgement. The occasion also gave students a wonderful opportunity to show their appreciation to the many generous donors in attendance, including Lawrence S. Bloomberg.
There were three new awards created this year and presented for the first time: The Mary B. Willet Nursing Award for undergraduate students; The Staples Family Graduate Award in Nursing, made possible by second generation U of T nursing graduate Eric Staples; and The Class of 6T1 Award, established in recognition of their 50th anniversary.
The best presentation by a PhD student in the May Doctoral Research Days 2011 is Krista Keilty for her presentation, titled “Factors that influence sleep in family caregivers of children with medical complexity.”
Started last year, the second annual Dean’s Medal was presented to the top students in each of the three levels of study: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master’s program and postdoctoral program. The winners of the Dean’s Medal are:

“As we continue to grow, we are dedicated to advancing our vision to ‘… lead in nursing research and scholarship and improve health locally and globally,’” said Acting Dean Linda McGillis Hall. “Providing financial resources and support for our students is integral to our vision.”
It should also be noted that in addition to the many students recognized at the ceremony, a number of our students also receive external awards, having successfully competed against numerous other applicants.
Congratulations to our future nurse leaders!
