Dr. Freida Chavez is a leader in global health/nursing and brings a unique combination of nursing and health care leadership, policy, and scholarship experience. Passionate about the need to transform nursing education and professional practice with a global perspective, she spearheaded integration of global health in the curriculum, using critical pedagogy to graduate nurses as global citizens at Bloomberg Nursing, University of Toronto .She spearheaded the development of U of T Nursing courses that examine global health issues including  Critical Perspectives in Global Health Nursing that offers student placements in resource constrained communities in India.

Championing Interprofessional Education (IPE), Dr. Chavez has led the design, implementation, and evaluation of IPE (Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology) Critical Perspectives in Global Health – for Interprofessional students going to international placements.

Forging strategic global collaborations, Dr. Chavez has successfully led several of U of T Nursing’s global projects, including the Nursing Leadership and Capacity Building in the context of Primary Health Care: Brazilian and Canadian Partnership. As founding Director, Global Affairs Office for two terms, she implemented the International Visiting Graduate Students program and many Bloomberg  Nursing’s   global projects, including those in Brazil, India, China,  Ethiopia, Oman and Spain as well as numerous international delegations.

Dr. Chavez is a Fellow in the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion in Hospitals and Health Care. She is cross appointed to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, an Adjunct Appointment at the Department of Community Public Health, School of Nursing Faculty, John Hopkins University, and is a Visiting Professor at the Universitat de Lleida, Spain.

Dr. Chavez was inducted to the American Academy of Nursing, an esteemed organization whose Fellows have made extraordinary contributions to nursing, healthcare and policy that advances health policy , practice and science . She is a member of the Global Nursing and Health Expert Panel of the Academy and a member of the Commission On Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools International Inc. (CGFNS) International Research and Evaluation Committee
